Propane cylinders take up little space and they can be kept either outside of a facility or inside of a storage area. It does take some time to switch out a propane cylinder, though, it still does requires operator training in order to be conducted safely and also need knowledge of safety standards like for example the Occupational Health and Safety Administration or OSHA.
Compared to the electric lift truck, IC forklifts are faster and easier to refuel. However, the internal combustion engine does create polluting emissions and are very noisy.
NARROW-AISLE LIFT TRUCKS
The ITA's Class 2 trucks consist of a large array of electric forklifts and these are particularly designed to be utilized in narrow aisles. The typical storage aisles are 12 feet wide, and this easily enables a counterbalanced forklift to turn in the aisle and put a load away. Typically, the very narrow aisles are around 5.5 to 6 feet wide, whereas narrow aisles are 8 feet wide. These narrow aisles need specialized lift trucks that are capable of putting away loads which are small enough to turn on a tight radius or without any turning at all.
The three most common narrow aisle forklifts are the reach trucks, turret trucks and order pickers. The differences amongst these forklifts are discussed below.
Narrow-Aisle Reach Lift Trucks
The conventional reach truck is the original narrow-aisle lift truck and these machinery do not need a counterweight. They are also small enough to turn around in narrow aisles. Instead, stability is provided by the outrigger arms that extend in front of the lift trucks. Nevertheless, these outrigger arms could prevent the trucks from getting close enough to the storage rack to deposit and retrieve loads, depending on the storage configuration. To be able to overcome this particular situation, a pantograph was designed. The pantograph is actually a reach truck that is made with a telescoping device. This allows forks to concisely and easily reach into storage locations.
The ideal environment for a narrow-aisle lift truck is a place which has good lighting, is clean, and has good traffic flow, well-maintained floors, as well as an ample turning aisle.
